How It Works
Each image is redrawn onto a canvas and re-encoded as a JPG at the quality level you choose, which controls how aggressively the format compresses visual detail. Lower quality values produce smaller files at the cost of some sharpness and added compression artifacts, especially on high-contrast edges and text.
Tips for Best Results
- Photos with lots of natural detail (portraits, landscapes) hold up well even at lower quality settings — flat-color graphics, screenshots, or images with text tend to show blocky artifacts sooner, so keep those closer to 80-90.
- Compressing an already-compressed JPG repeatedly causes generational quality loss. Keep an original, uncompressed copy and re-compress from that source rather than compressing the same file over and over.
- If a compressed image looks noticeably blocky around sharp edges or text, nudge the quality slider up rather than cropping the image smaller — cropping doesn't fix compression artifacts.

JPG's adjustable, lossy compression is what actually shrinks file size — PNG's compression is lossless and won't get meaningfully smaller just by re-saving it, so this tool standardizes on JPG output for real size savings.
